  3. Davai is a common Latvian expression used to encourage action, to prompt movement, or as an exclamation. It can serve as an enthusiastic affirmation, and its tone may be positive or negative, aggressive or emotional—full of contradictory meanings and feelings.

  4. The publication can be considered experimental, as it develops the flash prose genre, which allows for greater expressive capacity than traditional short prose. Small Currents are colorful, compact books created collaboratively by multiple authors.

  5. The book’s publication was financially supported by the State Cultural Capital Foundation (VKKF).

  • “Autobiography”, a poem included in the collection Answers – Autobiographical Poetry of Latvian Women, published by Strāva, 2025.

  • The third volume in the Small Currents (Mazās Strāvas) series, Answers, brings together twenty-one autobiographical poem and a series of collages by artist Rasa Jansone. The texts address contemporary everyday challenges faced by Latvian women, as well as difficult topics such as domestic violence, burnout, and sexism.

  • At the end of 2023, at the suggestion of poet Elvīra Bloma, a series of autobiographical poems began in issue 8 of Strāva magazine, featuring stylized “responses” by Elvīra Bloma and Inga Gaile to selected poems by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Sonja Åkesson.

  • Shortly thereafter, Strāva announced an autobiographical poetry competition, inviting Latvian women to speak openly about themselves and to create their own “answers.”

  • Fifteen works were selected for the competition, all of which are included in this new poetry collection. The winners are: Betija Zvejniece, Evelīna Mūrniece, Māra Ulme, Jena Andersone, Ulrika Ūpe, Juta Ance Ķirķis, Kristīne Jučkoviča, Agra Lieģe-Doležko, Lelde Logina, Lāsma Misčenko, Anna Simina, Amanda Stalidzāne, Patrīcija M.
